The Quran and the Messenger Verses 1–12

Ya-seen
Ya Sin.
Walqur-ani alhakeem
By the wise Qur'an,
Innaka lamina almursaleen
Lo! thou art of those sent
ʿAla siratin mustaqeem
On a straight path,
Tanzeela alʿazeezi arraheem
A revelation of the Mighty, the Merciful,
Litunthira qawman ma onthiraabaohum fahum ghafiloon
That thou mayst warn a folk whose fathers were not warned, so they are heedless.
Laqad haqqa alqawlu ʿalaaktharihim fahum la yu/minoon
Already hath the judgment, (for their infidelity) proved true of most of them, for they believe not.
Inna jaʿalna fee aʿnaqihimaghlalan fahiya ila al-athqani fahummuqmahoon
Lo! We have put on their necks carcans reaching unto the chins, so that they are made stiff-necked.
Wajaʿalna min bayni aydeehim saddanwamin khalfihim saddan faaghshaynahum fahum la yubsiroon
And We have set a bar before them and a bar behind them, and (thus) have covered them so that they see not.
Wasawaon ʿalayhim aanthartahumam lam tunthirhum la yu/minoon
Whether thou warn them or thou warn them not, it is alike for them, for they believe not.
Innama tunthiru mani ittabaʿaaththikra wakhashiya arrahmanabilghaybi fabashshirhu bimaghfiratin waajrin kareem
Thou warnest only him who followeth the Reminder and feareth the Beneficent in secret. To him bear tidings of forgiveness and a rich reward.
Inna nahnu nuhyeealmawta wanaktubu ma qaddamoo waatharahumwakulla shay-in ahsaynahu fee imamin mubeen
Lo! We it is Who bring the dead to life. We record that which they send before (them, and their footprints. And all things We have kept in a clear Register.

The people of the town and the man who came running Verses 13–32

Wadrib lahum mathalan as-habaalqaryati ith jaaha almursaloon
Coin for them a similitude: The people of the city when those sent (from Allah) came unto them;
Ith arsalna ilayhimu ithnaynifakaththaboohuma faʿazzazna bithalithinfaqaloo inna ilaykum mursaloon
When We sent unto them twain, and they denied them both, so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: Lo! we have been sent unto you.
Qaloo ma antum illabasharun mithluna wama anzala arrahmanumin shay-in in antum illa takthiboon
They said: Ye are but mortals like unto us. The Beneficent hath naught revealed. Ye do but lie!
Qaloo rabbuna yaʿlamu innailaykum lamursaloon
They answered: Our Lord knoweth that we are indeed sent unto you,
Wama ʿalayna illaalbalaghu almubeen
And our duty is but plain conveyance (of the message).
Qaloo inna tatayyarnabikum la-in lam tantahoo lanarjumannakum walayamassannakum minnaʿathabun aleem
(The people of the city) said: We augur ill of you. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands.
Qaloo ta-irukum maʿakum a-in thukkirtumbal antum qawmun musrifoon
They said: Your evil augury be with you! Is it because ye are reminded (of the truth)? Nay, but ye are froward folk!
Wajaa min aqsa almadeenatirajulun yasʿa qala ya qawmi ittabiʿooalmursaleen
And there came from the uttermost part of the city a man running. He cried: O my people! Follow those who have been sent!
Ittabiʿoo man la yas-alukum ajranwahum muhtadoon
Follow those who ask of you no fee, and who are rightly guided.
Wama liya la aʿbudu allatheefataranee wa-ilayhi turjaʿoon
For what cause should I not serve Him Who hath created me, and unto Whom ye will be brought back?
Aattakhithu min doonihi alihatanin yuridni arrahmanu bidurrin la tughniʿannee shafaʿatuhum shay-an wala yunqithoon
Shall I take (other) gods in place of Him when, if the Beneficent should wish me any harm, their intercession will avail me naught, nor can they save?
Innee ithan lafee dalalinmubeen
Then truly I should be in error manifest.
Innee amantu birabbikum fasmaʿoon
Lo! I have believed in your Lord, so hear me!
Qeela odkhuli aljannata qala yalayta qawmee yaʿlamoon
It was said (unto him): Enter paradise. He said: Would that my people knew
Bima ghafara lee rabbee wajaʿalaneemina almukrameen
With what (munificence) my Lord hath pardoned me and made me of the honoured ones!
Wama anzalna ʿalaqawmihi min baʿdihi min jundin mina assama-i wamakunna munzileen
We sent not down against his people after him a host from heaven, nor do We ever send.
In kanat illa sayhatanwahidatan fa-itha hum khamidoon
It was but one Shout, and lo! they were extinct.
Ya hasratan ʿalaalʿibadi ma ya/teehim min rasoolin illa kanoobihi yastahzi-oon
Ah, the anguish for the bondmen! Never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him!
Alam yaraw kam ahlakna qablahum minaalqurooni annahum ilayhim la yarjiʿoon
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them, which indeed returned not unto them;
Wa-in kullun lamma jameeʿun ladaynamuhdaroon
But all, without exception, will be brought before Us.

Signs in the world around you Verses 33–50

Waayatun lahumu al-ardualmaytatu ahyaynaha waakhrajna minhahabban faminhu ya/kuloon
A token unto them is the dead earth. We revive it, and We bring forth from it grain so that they eat thereof;
Wajaʿalna feeha jannatinmin nakheelin waaʿnabin wafajjarna feehamina alʿuyoon
And We have placed therein gardens of the date-palm and grapes, and We have caused springs of water to gush forth therein,
Liya/kuloo min thamarihi wamaʿamilat-hu aydeehim afala yashkuroon
That they may eat of the fruit thereof, and their hands made it not. Will they not, then, give thanks?
Glory be to Him Who created all the sexual pairs, of that which the earth groweth, and of themselves, and of that which they know not!
Waayatun lahumu allaylu naslakhuminhu annahara fa-itha hum muthlimoon
A token unto them is night. We strip it of the day, and lo! they are in darkness.
Washshamsu tajree limustaqarrin lahathalika taqdeeru alʿazeezi alʿaleem
And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.
Walqamara qaddarnahu manazilahatta ʿada kalʿurjooni alqadeem
And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf.
La ashshamsu yanbaghee lahaan tudrika alqamara wala allaylu sabiqu annahariwakullun fee falakin yasbahoon
It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.
Waayatun lahum anna hamalnathurriyyatahum fee alfulki almashhoon
And a token unto them is that We bear their offspring in the laden ship,
Wakhalaqna lahum min mithlihi mayarkaboon
And have created for them of the like thereof whereon they ride.
Wa-in nasha/ nughriqhum fala sareekhalahum wala hum yunqathoon
And if We will, We drown them, and there is no help for them, neither can they be saved;
Illa rahmatan minnawamataʿan ila heen
Unless by mercy from Us and as comfort for a while.
Wa-itha qeela lahumu ittaqoo mabayna aydeekum wama khalfakum laʿallakum turhamoon
When it is said unto them: Beware of that which is before you and that which is behind you, that haply ye may find mercy (they are heedless).
Wama ta/teehim min ayatin min ayatirabbihim illa kanoo ʿanha muʿrideen
Never came a token of the tokens of their Lord to them, but they did turn away from it!
Wa-itha qeela lahum anfiqoo mimmarazaqakumu Allahu qala allatheena kafaroolillatheena amanoo anutʿimu man law yashaoAllahu atʿamahu in antum illa fee dalalinmubeen
And when it is said unto them: Spend of that wherewith Allah hath provided you, those who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Shall we feed those whom Allah, if He willed, would feed? Ye are in naught else than error manifest.
Wayaqooloona mata hathaalwaʿdu in kuntum sadiqeen
And they say: When will this promise be fulfilled, if ye are truthful?
Ma yanthuroona illasayhatan wahidatan ta/khuthuhum wahumyakhissimoon
They await but one Shout, which will surprise them while they are disputing.
Fala yastateeʿoona tawsiyatanwala ila ahlihim yarjiʿoon
Then they cannot make bequest, nor can they return to their own folk.

The Day of Resurrection Verses 51–67

Wanufikha fee assoori fa-ithahum mina al-ajdathi ila rabbihim yansiloon
And the trumpet is blown and lo! from the graves they hie unto their Lord,
Qaloo ya waylana manbaʿathana min marqadina hatha mawaʿada arrahmanu wasadaqaalmursaloon
Crying: Woe upon us! Who hath raised us from our place of sleep? This is that which the Beneficent did promise, and the messengers spoke truth.
In kanat illa sayhatanwahidatan fa-itha hum jameeʿun ladayna muhdaroon
It is but one Shout, and behold them brought together before Us!
Falyawma la tuthlamunafsun shay-an wala tujzawna illa ma kuntumtaʿmaloon
This day no soul is wronged in aught; nor are ye requited aught save what ye used to do.
Inna as-haba aljannati alyawmafee shughulin fakihoon
Lo! those who merit paradise this day are happily employed,
Hum waazwajuhum fee thilalinʿala al-ara-iki muttaki-oon
They and their wives, in pleasant shade, on thrones reclining;
Lahum feeha fakihatun walahumma yaddaʿoon
Theirs the fruit (of their good deeds) and theirs (all) that they ask;
Salamun qawlan min rabbin raheem
The word from a Merciful Lord (for them) is: Peace!
Wamtazoo alyawma ayyuhaalmujrimoon
But avaunt ye, O ye guilty, this day!
Alam aʿhad ilaykum ya banee adamaan la taʿbudoo ashshaytana innahu lakumʿaduwwun mubeen
Did I not charge you, O ye sons of Adam, that ye worship not the devil – Lo! he is your open foe! –
Waani oʿbudoonee hatha siratunmustaqeem
But that ye worship Me? That was the right path.
Walaqad adalla minkum jibillankatheeran afalam takoonoo taʿqiloon
Yet he hath led astray of you a great multitude. Had ye then no sense?
Hathihi jahannamu allatee kuntumtooʿadoon
This is hell which ye were promised (if ye followed him).
Islawha alyawma bimakuntum takfuroon
Burn therein this day for that ye disbelieved.
Alyawma nakhtimu ʿala afwahihimwatukallimuna aydeehim watashhadu arjuluhum bima kanooyaksiboon
This day We seal up their mouths, and their hands speak out to Us and their feet bear witness as to what they used to earn.
Walaw nashao latamasnaʿala aʿyunihim fastabaqoo assiratafaanna yubsiroon
And had We willed, We verily could have quenched their eyesight so that they should struggle for the way. Then how could they have seen?
Walaw nashao lamasakhnahumʿala makanatihim fama istataʿoo mudiyyanwala yarjiʿoon
And had We willed, We verily could have fixed them in their place, making them powerless to go forward or turn back.

He who created you will bring you back Verses 68–83

Waman nuʿammirhu nunakkis-hu fee alkhalqiafala yaʿqiloon
He whom we bring unto old age, We reverse him in creation (making him go back to weakness after strength). Have ye then no sense?
Wama ʿallamnahu ashshiʿrawama yanbaghee lahu in huwa illa thikrunwaqur-anun mubeen
And We have not taught him (Muhammad) poetry, nor is it meet for him. This is naught else than a Reminder and a Lecture making plain,
Liyunthira man kana hayyanwayahiqqa alqawlu ʿala alkafireen
To warn whosoever liveth, and that the word may be fulfilled against the disbelievers.
Awa lam yaraw anna khalaqnalahum mimma ʿamilat aydeena anʿaman fahumlaha malikoon
Have they not seen how We have created for them of Our handiwork the cattle, so that they are their owners,

Wathallalnaha lahumfaminha rakoobuhum waminha ya/kuloon
And have subdued them unto them, so that some of them they have for riding, some for food?

Walahum feeha manafiʿu wamasharibuafala yashkuroon
Benefits and (divers) drinks have they from them. Will they not then give thanks?

Wattakhathoo min dooni Allahialihatan laʿallahum yunsaroon
And they have taken (other) gods beside Allah, in order that they may be helped.

It is not in their power to help them; but they (the worshippers) are unto them a host in arms.

So let not their speech grieve thee (O Muhammad). Lo! We know what they conceal and what proclaim.

Awa lam yara al-insanu annakhalaqnahu min nutfatin fa-itha huwa khaseemunmubeen
Hath not man seen that We have created him from a drop of seed? Yet lo! he is an open opponent.
Wadaraba lana mathalanwanasiya khalqahu qala man yuhyee alʿithamawahiya rameem
And he hath coined for Us a similitude, and hath forgotten the fact of his creation, saying: Who will revive these bones when they have rotted away?

Who hath appointed for you fire from the green tree, and behold! ye kindle from it.

Is not He Who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the like of them? Aye, that He is! for He is the All-Wise Creator,
Innama amruhu itha aradashay-an an yaqoola lahu kun fayakoon
But His command, when He intendeth a thing, is only that He saith unto it: Be! and it is.
Fasubhana allathee biyadihimalakootu kulli shay-in wa-ilayhi turjaʿoon
Therefor Glory be to Him in Whose hand is the dominion over all things! Unto Him ye will be brought back.

What Surah Yasin is about

Surah Yasin was revealed in Makkah. It speaks about the truth of the Prophet's message, the signs of Allah in the world around us, and the certainty of the Day of Resurrection. Its five sections follow each other like this.
The Quran and the MessengerFrom verse 1
The surah opens with the letters Ya Sin and an oath by the wise Quran that the Prophet ﷺ is truly one of the messengers, on a straight path. Allah keeps a record of what people do and the traces they leave behind (verse 12).
The people of the townFrom verse 13
Messengers come to a town and the people reject them. Then a man comes running from the far side of the city (verse 20) and begs his people to follow them. He is told “Enter Paradise”, and his only wish is that his people knew how his Lord forgave and honoured him (verses 26–27).
Signs in creationFrom verse 33
Dead earth that comes back to life (verse 33). Everything created in pairs (verse 36). Night drawn away from day, the sun running to its resting place (verse 38), the moon returning like an old, curved date stalk (verse 39), and ships carried safely across the sea (verse 41).
The Day of ResurrectionFrom verse 51
The trumpet is blown and people rise from their graves asking who woke them from their sleep (verse 52). The people of Paradise are greeted with “Peace”, a word from a Merciful Lord (verse 58). On that Day mouths are sealed, and hands and feet speak about what they did (verse 65).
Creation and returnFrom verse 68
A man holds up crumbling bones and asks who could bring them back to life (verse 78). Allah answers that the One who made them the first time will do it again (verse 79). When He wants something, He only says “Be”, and it is (verse 82). The surah ends in praise of the One who holds the dominion of everything (verse 83).

When do Muslims read Surah Yasin?

There is no single fixed time for Surah Yasin in authentic hadith, so read it whenever you can and try to keep it regular. These are the times Muslims most often read it.
In the morning
Many Muslims begin the day with Yasin. A report in Sunan al-Darimi mentions this, though its chain does not reach the Prophet ﷺ directly.
Beside someone who is ill or dying
Families often recite it gently next to a loved one. The narration behind this, and how scholars graded it, is in the table below.
On Thursday night or Friday
A custom in many homes. No authentic hadith ties Yasin to Thursday night, but reading it then is good, like reading it on any other night.
When remembering someone who has passed away
Many families read it together and make dua for the deceased. Dua reaches them by agreement of the scholars.

Virtues of Surah Yasin and what is authentic

You will see many sayings about Surah Yasin shared online. Here is where each one comes from and how hadith scholars graded it, so you can share them with confidence.
NarrationGradeWhat scholars said
Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah earns a good deed, and each good deed is multiplied ten times.al-Tirmidhi 2910Authentical-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih. It covers the whole Quran, so every letter of Surah Yasin is included.
Recite Yasin over those of you who are dying.Abu Dawud 3121, Ibn Majah 1448, AhmadDisputedIbn Hibban accepted it, while al-Daraqutni and later al-Albani graded it weak. Imam Ahmad recorded that the early elders read Yasin to the dying, and many scholars see it as a good practice.
Whoever recites Yasin at night, seeking the pleasure of Allah, is forgiven that night.Ibn Hibban, al-SahihDisputedIbn Hibban included it in his Sahih. Other hadith scholars have questioned its chain.
Whoever recites Yasin at the start of the day, his needs for that day are taken care of.Sunan al-Darimi, from Ata ibn Abi RabahWeakAta, one of the Successors, passed it on without naming who told him, so the chain does not reach the Prophet.
Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Yasin.al-Tirmidhi 2887Weakal-Tirmidhi recorded it and pointed out an unknown narrator in its chain. Some scholars, such as Abu Hatim al-Razi, rejected it outright. Many scholars still allow a weak narration to be quoted to encourage good deeds, as long as people are told it is weak.
Whichever view you follow, Surah Yasin is part of the Quran. Reading it, reflecting on it and living by it carries the reward of reciting the Quran. If your local scholar grades these narrations differently, follow their guidance.

Questions about Surah Yasin

How many verses are in Surah Yasin?
Surah Yasin has 83 verses in 5 sections (rukus). It is the 36th surah of the Quran and was revealed in Makkah. Verses 1 to 27 are in Juz 22 and verses 28 to 83 are in Juz 23, on pages 440 to 445 of the standard Madinah mushaf.
Is Surah Yaseen the same as Surah Yasin?
Yes. Yasin, Yaseen, Ya-Sin and Yasin Sharif are all ways of writing the name of the 36th surah, يس. In Pakistan and India it is usually written Yaseen, so this Surah Yaseen PDF is the same surah in full.
How long does it take to read Surah Yasin?
About 15 to 20 minutes at a steady pace. Sheikh Mishary Alafasy’s recitation on this page takes about 17 minutes.
When is the best time to read Surah Yasin?
Authentic hadith do not fix a time for it. Many people read it in the morning, on Thursday night or beside someone who is unwell. Choose a time you can keep up, because a small deed done regularly is most loved by Allah.
Which Surah Yasin PDF should I download?
To read on your phone, take the phone size. If you are still learning Arabic, the A4 with transliteration and English helps you pronounce each word. For Urdu meaning, take the Urdu A4. For elders or a gathering, print the large print booklet.
How do I print the large print booklet?
Print the booklet PDF double-sided on A4 and choose “flip on short edge” (some printers call it booklet printing). Stack the 4 sheets in order, fold them in half and staple along the fold. The pages are already arranged to read right to left, like a mushaf.
Is Surah Yasin really the heart of the Quran?
This saying comes from a narration in al-Tirmidhi that hadith scholars graded weak. Many scholars allow it to be mentioned to encourage reading, as long as it is made clear that it is weak. Either way, Surah Yasin is part of the Quran and every letter you recite is rewarded. See how each narration is graded.
Can I read Surah Yasin for someone who has passed away?
Dua for the deceased benefits them, by agreement of the scholars. Whether the reward of reciting the Quran reaches them is something scholars differ on, and many, including the Hanafi and Hanbali schools, hold that it does. If you are unsure, ask a scholar you trust, and keep making dua for them.
Is there a Surah Yasin PDF in Indo-Pak script?
Not yet. These PDFs use the Uthmani script of the Madinah mushaf. An Indo-Pak version is planned, in sha Allah, once we have permission to use a suitable Indo-Pak Quran font.
Which translation is used?
The English translation is by Marmaduke Pickthall (1930) and the Urdu is by Maulana Muhammad Junagarhi. Both are in the public domain. The transliteration is from Tanzil, as published by Quran.com.
What should I do with old printed copies?
Keep them somewhere clean or give them to a masjid. Copies that are worn out can be buried or burned completely, as the Companions did with old copies of the Quran in the time of Uthman (Sahih al-Bukhari 4987).
